Honourable Mentions
On the Theme of Transformation We received 204 entries to the competition (an increase of 8% over the 189 entries received in 2006). Our competition is open to English-language submissions from anywhere in the world. We were pleased to receive 2007 entries from sixteen diverse countries: Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Israel, Kenya, The Netherlands, South Africa, St Vincent and the Grenadines, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. We encourage people to submit wherever in the world they may be, or whoever they may be. Our judges do not see the name or contact information of the authors; they see just the title and text of the story when they choose the winners. We would like to thank the judges who support Momaya Press and our mission to promote the short story. Three judges comprised the 2007 panel: Lucy Alexander, Alison Hennessey, and Claire Nozières. Lucy Alexander is a writer and researcher at The Times Magazine. Lucy was a PR account manager at Freud Communications before becoming a journalist. Alison Hennessey is an Assistant Editor at Random House. Claire Nozières works at Andrew Nurnberg Associates as a literary agent. Previously she was Foreign Rights Manager at Frances Lincoln, an independent publishing house specialized in high quality illustrated books and children’s books. Claire sells translations rights to France for a wide-ranging list of contemporary US and UK fiction. Alison Hennessey has worked in publishing for five years, and is now an Editor at Random House. She also works as a freelance reader for a literary consultancy. (2) You may now pre-order your copy of the Momaya Annual Review 2007 at http://www.momayapress.com/store.htm The 2007 theme of transformation proved to be fertile ground for our writers imaginations. While entries for the short story competition were welcome on any fictional topic, the review gets its cohesion from stories, poems and artwork on this central theme. The short stories in this collection express the theme from the literal (a la Kafka) to the cerebral (the transition from childhood to adulthood). Overall, these stories highlight the power of transformation to change how we think of ourselves, others, and the world around us. You will not see the work published here elsewhere. We encourage you to share this anthology with friends, families, and writer. You may also purchase previous year’s editions on the website. We hope that our publication will inspire writers to write even more, and readers to put pen to paper. (3) The Momaya Short Story Competition 2008 is now accepting submissions at http://www.momayapress.com/contest.htm. The theme for this year is passion. It inspires, it creates, it infuriates, it rages, it loves, it lusts, it hungers, it satisfies. Passion is the fuel of life. This year's theme examines passion on all levels, all manifestations. Passion can take us where we want to go or get in the way, it can exhilarates or exhaust. It's not just about passion for people, but work, hobbies, joys and hates. It may come upon us suddenly, or so quietly we don't notice what’s transpired until the moment is past. Think Dostoevsky's "Brothers Karamazov," Nabokov's "Lolita," Thoreau's "On Golden Pond." Past Momaya Themes: We invite you to join the crusade to promote the short story to readers and writers worldwide by participating as a reader/writer in the Momaya Short Story Competition and Momaya Annual Review. Maya Cointreau and Monisha Saladanha You are invited to forward this email to other writers and readers. You may sign up to this newsletter at http://www.momayapress.com/newsletter.htm
