The 3rd annual Momaya Short Story Competition built on the success of our inaugural year with a greater number of varied submissions. Congratulations to our winners, who were chosen from a pool of 189 submissions (an increase of 7% on the number of submissions we received in 2005). Authors submitted stories from seventeen countries around the world (an increase of one country from 2005): Australia, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, China, France, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States. Women accounted for 60% of the entries, and many writers chose to submit multiple stories.

The three judges were Claire Nozieres, a literary agent at Andrew Nurnberg Associates; Rosalind Porter, Random House; and Lucy Alexander, a writer at The Times. The judges were impressed with the high overall quality of the entries, which made it difficult to single out the winners.

(2) Every year the Momaya Annual Review has a different theme. While entries for the short story competition can be on any fictional topic, the review gets its cohesion from stories, poems and artwork on a central theme, interspersed amongst the contest winners' stories. The 2007 Annual Review will feature fiction in a variety of categories from the winners of the Momaya Short Story Competition and winners of Momaya Awards, as well as a stunning collection of photographs, poems and short stories exploring "Transformation".

Transformation. We've all experienced it at some time, whether we wanted to or not: Life is change. The universe is in constant flux. This year's theme examines change and transformation on all levels, all planes.

Transformation can be subtle or obvious, exhilarating or sad. It may come upon us suddenly, or so quietly we don't notice what has transpired until the moment is past. Think Kafka's "Metamorphoses," Gogol's "The Nose," Vonnegut's "Galapagos." Or on a simpler level: childbirth, divorce, growing up, death, or even simpler, a haircut. A moment when our definitions change, when we transcend ourselves and emerge as someone new: "As good As It Gets," "Steel Magnolias," "Bend It Like Beckham."
